One of the greatest hospitals in the country, Howard University Hospital is a Level One Trauma Center and provides the most complete array of medical services.

Freedmen’s Hospital, which predated the Howard University Hospital, provided care to the black population of the District of Columbia for more than a century. Blacks who were emancipated, crippled, or elderly received treatment at the Freedmen’s Hospital and Asylum, which was first built in 1862 on the grounds of Camp Barker at 13th and R Streets, NW. Dr. Alexander Augusta, the first African-American to lead a hospital, was given control of it in 1863.

After the Civil War, it continued to be governed by the federal government and served as the teaching hospital for Howard University Medical School, founded in 1868. Congress authorized the building of a new hospital at the start of the 20th century, and it was finished in 1909. The 278-bed Freedmen’s Hospital pleased Abraham Flexner on his visit to the District of Columbia in that year, and he believed Howard University Medical School was the only institution in the area with a bright future. Howard University acquired Freedmen’s Hospital in 1967, and it served as a hospital there until 1975.
